Everyone knows that Belgium is a paradise for cyclists, and this is nothing new. But did you know that bicycle leasing is also very popular with us? That makes sense, too, because leasing a bike has a whole host of advantages. In this article, Quentin van Meerbeeck (Sales Manager at our leasing partner B2Bike) and Carlos Romao (Area Manager at the Lucien Bike store in Brussels) explain what you need to think about to choose the right bike.
"The range is extremely varied, so it's important to know exactly what you want", explains Carlos Romao from Lucien Bike in Brussels: "It goes without saying that the definition of the right bike varies greatly from one person to another. What do you plan to do by bike? How far do you travel and how often do you cycle to work? What infrastructure is there on the way to work? Can you ride fast on a cycle path, or do you have to cycle through the narrow streets in the centre of Brussels?"
The e-bike has undergone huge developments
That's a lot of questions, and Carlos has more: "What do you like? Do you want a bike that's as lightweight as possible, or a sturdy cargo bike that can carry more weight, so you can take your children to school? The e-bike market has changed significantly over the past decade. Whether you're looking at cargo bikes, mountain bikes, racing bikes, city bikes, tandems and more, almost every type of bike is now also available as an electric bike in all sorts of sizes and weights. You can choose between all kinds of batteries and different levels of battery life, too. That's why all these targeted questions are so important."
And what about the price?
"It's crucial to choose a quality bike. This type of bike may be a little more expensive, but there's a real difference in terms of the mechanics and battery, as well as the service afterwards", says Carlos.
How much exactly does a bike that meets these criteria cost? "Again, it all depends on what you want, of course. An entry-level electric bike costs around €3,000; for the mid-range, you're looking at between €4,000 and €5,000; and a top-end bike can set you back €10,000 or more. We notice that families are spending more money on this item than before, with the bike often being seen as an alternative to a second car – particularly for those living in cities. In cities, it's not just a question of sustainability and the overall cost, but also of convenience. After all, it's much easier to park a bike than a second car."
Bike Leasing: the ideal (and fast) solution
Either way, a bike remains a significant expense despite their convenience and all the sustainability benefits. It therefore makes sense that Bike Lease has become increasingly popular in recent years. "Of course", says Quentin van Meerbeeck from our partner B2Bike. "Arval's numbers speak for themselves. In 2023, we observed an increase of 20% compared to 2022”.
Bicycle leasing offers all the advantages of traditional leasing. You spread the cost over a longer period, you benefit from favourable all-in rates, with an attractive tax deduction on your gross salary, and you have the option to buy the bike at a low price at the end of the lease.
For your employer, all the costs are 100% deductible, and it also saves on social security contributions and employer's charges. Ordering, delivery and insurance are well organised. If Carlos has the bike you want in stock, you'll be riding it two to three weeks after placing your order."
Maintenance is included (and it's important)
You also benefit from 24/7 support in Belgium and our neighbouring countries, as well as in Italy and Spain. Maintenance and repairs are also included through a convenient maintenance card. And that's handy. "Just like a car, a bike also needs to be well serviced. Especially e-bikes, which are often more evolved from a mechanical perspective. In terms of safety, it's also essential that the brakes and tyres, for example, are in perfect condition", concludes Carlos.
Arval launched its Bike Lease offer in 2018 to supplement its mobility offer for employees, and has seen a huge success since then. Over the past year, Arval's bicycle fleet has grown by 20%, and ambitions are high due to the widespread increase in the mileage allowance, as well as the development of new measures such as the federal mobility budget. Thanks to our five-year relationship, Arval can count on B2Bike's extensive network and expertise to offer its customers a range tailored to their needs.
